Conclusion (Baba Narinder Singh Ji)
aba Narinder Singh ji lived
a unique Religion, a Religion of unending Holy tears, a Religion of Love
Supreme, a Religion of total humility and a Religion of exclusive devotion,
complete surrender and loyalty to his beloved Master as His humble dog.
Initially he beheld His visions, felt the gentle pressure of His Holy Hand on his head and heard His reassuring holy voice but later beheld and talked to Him face to face. For him the eternal physical presence of Mahan Baba Nand Singh Ji Maharaj was thus a direct experience of Reality, of Eternal Truth and not a matter of sheer blind faith.
He was completely immersed in the sweetness of His Nam (Nam Ras) and drenched in the fragrance of His Lotus feet (Prem Ras). Sat Guru is the real and true bestower of Love-Divine, of Prema. His pull is highly magnetic and powerful. He pulls and draws the blessed devotee with such intensity that he is lifted to the highest plane of Bliss - Prem Ras.
The Sun-like spiritual glow on his face was a mere reflection of the Eternal Glory of Baba Nand Singh Ji Maharaj.
Baba Narinder Singh Ji was a blazing flame of Divine Love and none who came in his contact could remain unaffected. He scattered the fragrance of this Love wherever he stayed. Even the atmosphere of the place he stayed got surcharged with this unusual fragrance and spread joy and peace.
Once he said that the sun and moon provide physical illumination and that illumination is also restricted to a part of the day. Illumination bestowed by Mahan Baba Ji is eternal. It never sets and does not get exhausted.
Pure divine love was his Supreme Religion and humility of heart was his prime wealth.
Having surrendered his all i.e. mind, body, possessions at the holy feet of his beloved Master and having become a bonded labourer to the Master’s Will, he performed wonderful deeds of great heroic valour.
His look had a remarkable spiritual majesty and charm.
He observed immaculate purity in the service and worship of Sri Guru Granth Sahib.
How glorious, wonderful and miraculous is the power of the Lord’s pure love and His Amrit Nam. So intense was the force of this love in the hearts of true Bhagats like Namdev and Dhanna that they could perceive the Lord in flesh and blood with their physical eyes. My respected father, Baba Narinder Singh Ji, sought only one boon from his beloved Master. He sought from Baba Nand Singh Ji Maharaj, Baba Nand Singh Ji Himself. He asked from the Lord, the Lord Himself because he yearned and wailed for his beloved Master only and for nothing else. He had staked his all for the sake of his beloved Master. He consecrated every breath of his life to the sacred love of his beloved Satguru.
Always bereaved with the pangs of separation from his beloved Satguru, his condition became pathetic. Unending tears of love were his prayer, his worship, his devotion and bhagti, his religion, his expression, his language, his tapasaya, his austerities.
With these over-flowing tears of love, he daily bathed the holy feet of his beloved Master Baba Nand Singh Ji Maharaj. With these holy tears present, his eyes gleemed with vision eternal. This was unique Nit-Nem, a unique way of worship, a unique offering. These most precious pearls of his holy tears worked wonders and miracles. His over-flowing love attracted over-flowing grace.
Prema ras is the supreme ras. Prema ras is the essence, flavour of pure devotion, bhagti. There is nothing comparable with prema ras. Mahan Baba Ji, the most compassionate Master, had bestowed the boon of prema ras to father. Endowed and blessed with this unique and supreme boon, his whole life was actuated with this divine love. This pure love was his perpetual food, his very sustenance, his very life. Mati Das gave supreme sacrifice fired with this love of his beloved Satguru Sri Guru Teg Bahadur Sahib. It was this love which glowed like a sun on his face.Divine Love, humility and sacrifice are synonymous. These shine and blaze together in a loving heart. This love of Baba Nand Singh Ji Maharaj was writ-large on father’s broad forehead and nothing could conceal this.
As Nam cannot be cut by any weapon, cannot be burnt by fire, nor drowned in water, nor dried by air, nor robbed by robbers, similarly the most precious instinct, the emotion of pure love cannot be touched by any foreign element. Because the Nectar of Nam and love is lodged deep in the spiritual heart, in the soul and is the very support of life.
Nam is the bliss of the soul, it is the most enrapturing, enchanting, thrilling music and celestial melody of the soul, the spiritual heart. By Satguru’s grace, the celestial echo of His holy Nam throbs in the whole body, in the whole being, in the very fibre of the entire existence.
Though he had developed a strong disinclination towards worldly relations and activities, he had snapped all worldly ties after retirement and spent 30 years of his retired life in exclusive loving worship and service of Sri Guru Granth Sahib.
He was a resolute, vigorous and totally devoted Police Officer in his profession. And after his retirement his stead-fast determination, vigour, and the zeal and earnestness for which he was well known, were now fully diverted to spiritual pursuit.
Totally immersed in the all prevading reality, he used to envision his beloved Lord in all alike. In such perception no trace of jealousy, envy, rivalry or pride is left.
His dwelling place was the Lotus feet of Baba Nand Singh Ji Maharaj and continues to be so. He once gave his permanent address as the Lotus feet of his beloved Master, Baba Nand Singh Ji Maharaj, and he is eternally dwelling there. Surprisingly, whenever he is to be contacted now, it is through those Lotus feet that he responds to his admirers and clears their doubts.
In the early forties, in a vision, Babaji asked father to hide deep into His Lotus feet. Father dived deep into the Sacred feet. S.Sampuran Singh Ji along with some other disciples could not trace and search father. Unique feature of this incident was that father never left that blessed shelter and abode of Babaji’s Lotus feet, and lived the remainder of his life thereafter, deeply rooted in that abode. He operated and did his other duties from that abode only. His every activity emitted the fragrance of Babaji’s Lotus feet. Intense spiritual glow on his face was enough proof of his continuous immersion in the depths of the Lord’s feet. He had thus attained the bliss of the holy feet of his beloved Lord while living and remained intoxicated with that Nectar throughout.
He did not permit anyone to touch his feet. He once told me that if any one touched his feet, he felt as if a snake had bitten him. It was a most painful experience for him.
He did everything at the dictate of holy Sri Guru Granth Sahib. He invariably took Hukamnama from Sri Guru Granth Sahib and followed the dictate in letter and spirit with a rock-like faith. His sole guide in his spiritual and earthly life was Sri Guru Granth Sahib. Seeking the wish, the orders of Sri Guru Granth Sahib in everything spiritual and mundane had made his life totally God-oriented.
He drank the Nectar of Devotion to his heart’s content. Every moment of his life he was immersed in conscious service of the Divine. He invoked the Lord’s presence day and night. Every moment of his life he toiled with a yearning heart with his face, mind and soul turned to his beloved Master in perpetual sajda, in eternal homage.
As he had surrendered his all at the holy feet of his Master, his mind was always established in divine absorption and was always intoxicated with the elixir of the Lord’s Name. A unique divine glow on his face was in itself a proof of his perfect peace of mind and of total contentment.
After his early midnight bath, he would himself prepare Karah Prashad for the Lord. He used to be in the holy service and presence of Sri Guru Granth Sahib from about 2.00 a.m.to 9.00 or 10.00 a.m. Whenever he emerged out of his prayer room his face used to be shining with the glow and lustre of the rising sun. This extra ordinary glow on his face in itself spoke of his direct and intimate personal contact with his beloved Lord for the past many hours.
We had the good fortune of also seeing and watching him, a number of times, in another wonderful ecstatic mood. When his precious tears started flowing in streams to bathe the lotus feet of his beloved Master, nothing could restrain him, nothing could divert his attention. He used to be actually sporting in an Ocean of Bliss. Sacred memory thereof is so overwhelming and elevating as to defy description.
Prema bhagti - divine love was predominant and transparent in every type of bhagti he did. In recitation of Gurbani, in listening to Kirtan, in service of Sri Guru Granth Sahib, whatever he did, he did all this in maddening ecstasy of love. He was totally possessed by Prema Bhagti and that was visibly the supreme essence of his earthly life. He had become an embodiment of true love.
In a vision at Rawalpindi, during the terrible days of partition, father saw the holy hand of Baba Nand Singh Ji Maharaj bleeding. On enquiry, compassionate Baba Ji replied, “This hand takes upon itself, consumes all the blows and shots of the enemy on you.” The Holy hand of Baba Ji always acted as the Divine shield for father against all odds.
When the Guru’s perpetual presence is felt in every breath, is experienced every moment of life, Guru consciousness rises to a state of sublimity and lofty bliss. The joy, the bliss of meditation on the Lotus feet of the beloved Lord and steadfast Guru consciousness rises far beyond the limits of intellectual understanding and mental grasp and cannot be described in words. As Baba Nand Singh Ji Maharaj spent every moment of His life in firm, and perpetual living presence of His beloved Lord Guru Nanak, so did Baba Narinder Singh Ji, consecrate every breath of his life on the Lotus feet of his beloved Master Baba Nand Singh Ji Maharaj. He lived every moment in enchanting bliss of Baba Nand Singh Ji Maharaj’s eternal presence.
The Lord grants a boon of suffering to those with whom he is pleased, In the annals of spiritual history, no one has attained God realisation on a bed of flowers. Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib was asked the same question as to why devotees of God face and undergo so much suffering. “Real nature of the world cannot be otherwise comprehended and known,” was His reply. It was really amazing that undergoing successive sufferings and calamities, spiritual glow on father’s face correspondingly and progressively increased and glowed with more intensity. Even four days after his death, when his mortal body was to be consigned to waters, his face glowed with the same intensity. Physical death could not dampen and dim the spiritual glow radiating like a sun from his face. Such is the unique glory of divine love which Baba Nand Singh Ji Maharaj had so graciously bestowed on His loving devotee.
As the sufferings of father multiplied and grew in intensity, his faith and devotion rather strengthened. No worldly challenges, no sufferings, no jolts howsoever strong, nor even deaths in the family of his wife and later his son, could shake his faith and devotion. He rather rejoiced in sufferings, sensing the divine hands of his own Saviour behind them. Amazingly, he had consecrated every suffering at the altar of his beloved Master. For true devotees, sufferings are accepted as blessings.
Many a time he used to say, “Narinder Singh had died long ago.” Supreme object of his love, adoration and worship was Baba Nand Singh Ji Maharaj. Thus immersed and totally buried in Guru consciousness, every moment of his life he had completely lost his own individuality, ego and identity and instead in his form and personality radiated the splendour of Baba Nand Singh Ji Maharaj. Having thus literally died while actually living, he led an astonishingly blessed life.
Like a fragrant and vibrant flower of divine love, he perpetually lays prostrate at the lotus feet of his beloved Master Baba Nand Singh Ji Maharaj.
